New School Year - Another Birthday Party

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Gone, or about to go, are the lazy days of summer. Back into the school year schedule with all the activities and the ferrying to and fro. The anxiety about a new grade, new teachers, new friends to make, harder things to learn. It’s an exciting time, yet stressful, for our kids as well as the parents as everyone switches into a different gear from the summer. Adding a birthday party into the mix can feel like a daunting task.

Choosing the Right Birthday Party Themes Is Essential

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

If you are planning something special for your child’s next celebration, one of the most important things you need to do is choose from the many birthday party themes that you’ll no doubt think of. This is essential not so you can purchase matching themed plates and napkins- it’s way more important to the ultimate success of your party than that.

Your party theme is like the flour in your gravy- without it you just have grease and water that don’t really mix.

Or the standard party games that are fun, but nothing extraordinary. But take a simple old game like the card game ‘Concentration’, blow it up to life size with graphics related to your theme, and it’s a whole new game! With the added bonus of a little goody they can take home at the end.  And your printed graphics from the game won’t rot their teeth either.

Think of yourself as the M.C. rather than just the hostess/server/maid, and you can string any variety of short but engaging games around your chosen theme. With a little thought ahead of time and a few well chosen words, the M.C. sets the stage for each game, relates it to the theme giving it that extra something and also explains to the kids what they’re going to be doing.

Perhaps the most important job of your theme is to get the kids all excited about your party, to start the buzz about your event. First off, that buzz means the world to your child, putting them at the center of the attention for a few days before his or her celebration. And the best way to create the buzz is to have an invitation that intrigues them, that hints at something they can’t quite grasp.

Have you ever told your child you had a surprise for them? If you didn’t deliver on that surprise immediately, I can bet your son or daughter pestered you to death until the time came. Structure your themed invitation to have them guessing about what’s in store and anticipating the unknown, and your birthday child will be a very happy camper beaming in the midst all that buzz, buzz buzz…

Of course, choosing and planning birthday party themes is not easy. Sometimes it is helpful to have an experienced mom come alongside you to help you through it all. The Birthday Party Games Lady is a mom who is ready to help you put together your next event. She has a website, http://www.birthdaypartygameslady.com/, where you can purchase and download kits that take you step by step through the perfectly themed celebration. Winning Birthday Party Tips and Tricks

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Every great mom knows that having the right birthday party tips and tricks is one of the only ways to stay sane when planning her child’s yearly celebration.

And the most important of those is the games and activities that you provide for the groups enjoyment.

Age is perhaps the single most important factor in choosing your party activities. Don’t ask a bunch of 6 year olds to play a game that takes more than about 15 minutes- they need a series of quick moving and short games to stay tuned in. The older they are, the more you can ask them to think as part of the fun. Trust me- they’re not only able to think, it enhances their fun.

Good birthday party tips and tricks will not cost you a fortune. The best parties will be remembered for a long time by the kids who attend because they are fun and different from all the other parties they go to. Not because they ate their cake off an expensive cartoon figure plate.

Traditional games for birthdays are overdone. Every child has been to a celebration where they played Charades. Ho-Hum. But twist this old stand-by game up a bit and put it in the context of a Harry Potter theme, and you’ve got your group casting spells! They won’t even realize that they’re playing Charades. And no one will think it’s just another Ho-Hum party.

Does your little girl and her friends love to dress up and put on little skits? Turn their enjoyment of this very traditional activity into your whole party where they dress up and act out a favorite fairy tale (and they end up doing all the work, not you).

Treasure hunts are one of the oldest of party activities, and not so overused in this day and age. But spice it up by having them hunt for clues to a mystery and it takes on a whole new dimension of fun.

One place to find these quality birthday party tips and tricks is with the Birthday Party Games Lady. She has been planning parties since her girls were little, and she understands how to make children’s birthdays special, memorable, and affordable. When you purchase one of her kits, you will have all that you need to have the best birthday celebration possible. For example, her Magica Party kit helps you plan a fairy tale themed party that lets your little girl and her friends perform a skit for your enjoyment. There is even a detective kit that is perfect for boys or girls and lets them work through a mystery together. You can find out more about her packages at http://www.birthdaypartygameslady.com/. She has kits for children aged 6 to 13, so check her out today!

Birthday Party Ideas for Kids of All Ages

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

All kids, no matter if they are teenagers or elementary age, expect a wonderful party when celebrating their birthday, and look to you to provide it. But finding birthday party ideas that fit your child’s age and also your budget can be a mental challenge and stress inducer.

But you don’t need to come up with anything extravagant to create a memorable party. Even digging into your own childhood memories can yield some interesting ideas- maybe even things today’s generation has never done.

One year I was way overcommitted and had no time. Someone in my house remarked they wished it was still summer, and the party was born. We had Summer Camp in November, complete with s’mores in the fireplace and apple bobbing. I had each guest bring a 2-3 minute ghost story that they told to various small groups. I bought theatre type makeup at the party store, made some templates to get their creative juices going, and they painted each other’s faces in teams of 2 then voted for the ‘best’ face painting job. They had a wonderful time, and the birthday girl was delighted.

Or focus on something your child and his or her group really gets into. Does your child devour every Harry Potter book the moment it hits the shelves? If so, you may want to consider planning a celebration with the boy wizard as the central theme. This would be a great theme for the preteen or teenager living in your home.

The best birthday party ideas are usually quite affordable. The expensive parties where everything is fully orchestrated by some stranger are usually not the most enjoyable for the children. Expensive and extensive decorations don’t make it fun. Instead, the kids need to be actively involved with the celebration, and this is best accomplished through games and interactivity, not expensive plates and napkins. No matter what theme you choose for your child’s celebration, make sure you plan interactive games into the day.

Does this sound difficult? One resource you can use to get ready-made birthday party ideas is the Birthday Party Games Lady website. Here you will find age-specific parties in convenient, instantly downloadable kits. Everything you need is included, from themed invitations to the games to the themed thank you notes. There’s a Harry Potter theme, a Survivor theme, and a detective theme, to name a few. To see all of the party kits, visit today at http://www.birthdaypartygameslady.com/. You will have instant access to everything you need to put together a winning event when you purchase one of these parties!

How to Avoid the Kids Birthday Party Nightmare

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Not exactly on the scale of global warming, but all us parents worry that our child’s birthday party won’t live up to their very high expectations. After all, they’ve been waiting months for this event, building it up in their mind all along. And the last party they went to was deemed ‘awesome’ by the kids. Nothing like a little pressure!

You work days, maybe weeks, buying stuff and putting party games together to keep the kids occupied and having fun. After a couple of your activities, one or two kids wander off to do something else, probably creating a mess. At best, you’ve now been put in the unfortunate position of having to play ‘bad cop’ to keep the festivities on track. At worst, none of this escapes the eye of your birthday child, who is now all worried that his or her party isn’t as good as it should be, and the anxiety ratchets right up. Now that the stress level has been raised, the least little thing becomes a crisis in the eyes of your birthday child. As the stress increases, the behavior heads south, and you’ve got the kids birthday party ‘Nightmare’ on your hands.

This scenario is always triggered by the parents’ need to step in and exert control. It’s their party, they don’t want you controlling things, and the minute you do they realize things aren’t going as perfectly as planned. And the spiral begins.

Having done numerous birthday parties for my own kids that morphed into the business of selling party games packages for kids on the Internet, I’ve found the antidote to this nightmare. It may be politically incorrect these days, but the answer is a little team competition built into your activities.

The operative words here are ‘a little’ and ‘team’. The team aspect is critical, as it takes the focus, and the pressure, off the birthday child and places it on a group instead. With two or more groups playing as teams, it’s no longer ‘my birthday party’ but a group effort. Competition gives the games a goal, winning, that focuses that group on the task at hand and vastly decreases the probability of non-participation and your need to step in and exert parental control. And there’s no need to highlight the competitive aspect with prizes for winners- the simple goal of winning is sufficient incentive for the kids. As a team effort, the less competitive kids can contribute as they choose in a non-threatening environment.

Keep each individual game short so those attention spans aren’t stretched to the breaking point. If the competition ends up lopsided with one team noticeable outperforming the other, just mix things up: “Everybody with white socks on this team for the next game!” They’ll never figure out it wasn’t part of your plan all along.

In short- everybody wins when you include a bit of team competition in your games. The kids get and stay better focused on your activities. With all involved, you can remain in your role as host rather than be the controlling parent. The birthday child can focus on the fun instead of what’s going wrong. No Birthday Party Nightmare; it will be a celebration that’s great fun for everyone, even you.

To see how a little team competition can be added to your next kids birthday party celebration, visit www.birthdaypartygameslady.com and check out the Survivor Party for ages 6-8, the Harry Potter Party for kids 8 to 11 or the Detective Party for 8-10 year olds. Each includes the competitive aspect discussed here to create engaging games that keep everybody tuned in and having a great time.

Birthday Party Games Make or Break Children’s Parties

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Is there a special child in your life getting ready to celebrate his or her birth? If so, you need to start thinking about the activities that provide the fun your child and his or her friends. After all, nothing is worse than a room full of kids who have nothing to do and are bored. Engaging and fun birthday party games are the only way to ensure that the party is a true success.

Too many of the old standard games involve one child doing, the rest watching. A sure recipe for boredom: wandering off to create a mess, or making comments that upset the flow or divert the kids. Your party activities need to involve ALL of the children ALL of the time. Then, everything will remain under control and you won’t have to be the bad cop keeping the kids in line.

Interactive games are the answer. Party games that you can link to your party’s theme, which will enhance the fun and engagement. Activities that involve everyone and everyone works together toward a common purpose. Throw in some thinking and you’ve got a winning scenario for your party.

Have the kids’ solve a mystery or puzzle, put on a skit, create something as a group. Challenge them and give them incentive, and you’ll be surprised what they can accomplish- even in a ‘party’ setting. These kinds of activities will actually end up saving you money too. When the kids are really involved in the games, they don’t need, won’t focus on or even notice those expensive paper goods or decorations, so you needn’t spend the money.

Make sure your planned activities are flexible. You will want to be able to party inside, if needed, because you never know when it might rain. Have an extra game up your sleeve, just in case something comes up and one does not work out as planned. Have a timed schedule for all your planned activities, so you can move things along at the proper pace for your age group, but be always ready to make a change as needed.

One great way to get all of the flexible and affordable birthday party games you need in one convenient place is by visiting the Birthday Party Games Lady. Created by a mom like you, I spent many, many hours planning activities for my own kids’ birthday celebrations. I’ve learned what works, and what doesn’t. And now I offer you the chance to purchase and download complete parties from the website. Five of them with themes that are things kids love, like a Survivor challenge and Harry Potter. Visit today at http://www.birthdaypartygameslady.com/ to see all five of these winning parties for kids age 6 to 13. Great Tips for a Truly Successful Kids Birthday Party

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Are you facing a kids birthday party? Don’t stress- you can host and run a memorable, fun party if you use these tried and true tips for success.

First and foremost, your theme is the key to a successful day. Without a theme, your activities will just be a collection of things to do with nothing tying it all together and keeping the kids totally focused on your games. However, a theme for the day goes much deeper than just purchasing pre-printed plates, napkins, and streamers, all at significant expense. No, a theme that piques their curiosity creating excitement and anticipation about what they’ll be doing starts your party on the right foot. A theme that binds your activities into a whole keeps them all on your wavelength instead of their own. A theme that follows all the way through to their take-home party gift makes it all memorable and talked about for days or weeks afterwards- keeping the glow on your birthday child.

The best kids birthday party starts with an invitation that introduces your exciting theme. Something they think is adult, or that they’re all interested in, or most importantly something that hasn’t been done a million times and is new to them. Your invitation should spark their curiosity, making them wonder what it’s all going to be about. Take, for example, a medieval themed mystery party with kings, queens, and lots of palace intrigue (for young teenagers or preteens). An invitation that invites them to a palace wedding that starts the intrigue rolling creates substantially more ‘buzz’ about your party that an invitation to a medieval mystery party. And that’s the whole idea!

Following on the medieval mystery theme, you can name your home your “castle,” and decorate it accordingly. Spend your money here rather than on overpriced party supplies that don’t really enhance your theme. Have the children dress for their mystery roles and they’ll be already invested in the party before they even arrive.

Perhaps the most wonderful thing about kids, even young teenagers and preteens, is they still have wonderful imaginations and in a supportive setting they’re not afraid to use them and step outside what we adults would consider the boundaries of convention. Give them a scenario to work with, lots of information to use or ignore and everything set up at cross-purposes, and they’ll come up with incredible ways around problems or ways to achieve their goals. They just need the freedom to do things their way, not the adult way. Build these factors into your mystery and you’ll be amazed at what they do and how much fun they have. And you won’t know what’s going to happen until they make it happen!

Planning out the story line for your murder-mystery is fun, but time consuming. Unfortunately, most murder-mystery games you’ll find online are too adult for teenagers or preteens. However, the Birthday Party Games Lady has a medieval themed kit specifically designed for this age group ready for you to purchase, download, and print. Everything is included from invitations, to the complete story line they work from, to the thank you notes. Of course, there are also parties for younger children and children with other interests. To see all of the kids birthday party themes, visit http://www.birthdaypartygameslady.com/. You will not be disappointed.

Appropriate age(s) for the Birthday Party Games Lady Survivor Party

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

By far the most frequent question I get asked by parents is whether kids older than 8 can still enjoy my Survivor Party Game. So it seemed appropriate to address this issue here in my blog.

That answer depends on the kids in your group- not just the birthday child. If they are 9 or 10 or 11 and going on 16, ‘too cool’ for their own good and likely to look down their noses at anything that doesn’t measure up to their ‘coolness’ standard, don’t try this party. And very unfortunately, it only takes one kid to make a comment that puts all the others up on their guard about not measuring up to ‘the standard’ to put a real damper on your festivities.

On the other hand, if the kids in your group can still get down and dirty and be silly, they’ll have a wonderful time. The team competition built into the party makes it much more likely that they’ll all ‘buy in’ to all the activities and work together to ‘win’ (even though the only prize for winning is the fun they have).

They all grow up too darn fast as it is, so if your party group are still ‘kids’, celebrate that with the Survivor Party even if the group is a bit older than my recommended age on the website. It’s all too soon they won’t want these kind of parties anymore, and then you’ll miss it. I know I do.

And that’s the whole point of the Birthday Party Games Lady parties: to celebrate our children while they’re still kids. I swear my oldest was in pigtails and braces last week: she leaves for college in 15 days!!
